In a major move to attract adventure tourism, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan has made some high-altitude peaks and trekking trails accessible in the Karakoram range. Green Tourism Pakistan, the country’s official tourism promotional platform, shared the development.

According to Green Tourism Pakistan, this is the first time that many of these peaks have been opened to the public, a major spur to adventure activities.

Eight New Peaks Now Open for Expeditions

The new open peaks, ranging from 6,620 meters to 7,401 meters in height, are ideal for alpine climbers and high-altitude trekkers:

Ghent Peak-I (7,401m)
Ghent Peak-II (7,342m)
Baltoro Kangri (7,282m)
Sherpi Kangri (7,380m)
Depeak Peak (7,150m)
Kaberi Peak (6,950m)
Chumik Kangri (6,754m)
Gharkun Tower (6,620m)

Except for a few, most of the peaks can be accessed via routes traversing through Skardu, Khaplu, Haldi, Dumsum, and the exquisitely scenic Kundos Valley with technical challenges as well as scenic variation.

Newly Opened Trekking Routes

Apart from the summits, new trekking trails have also been opened this season. In particular, some fall in open zones, and no No-Objection Certificate (NOC) is required, simplifying logistics for both domestic and international tourists.

Mehdiabad–Deosai
Panmah Glacier–Chiring West Mustagh Pass
Hispar Pass–Skardu

Restricted Zone (NOC Required):

Baltoro–Mashabrum Pass Hushe
Included destinations are old sites such as Concordia, K2 Base Camp, Gasherbrum BC, and Mashabrum Pass.

These routes offer unparalleled variety, ranging from glacier traversals to widescreen panoramas of the world’s highest peaks. Visitors also pass vibrant villages on the way, adding culture to the landscape experience.

The region is already renowned for legendary ascents such as K2, Broad Peak, and Trango Towers, and the new approaches are bound to attract a torrent of trekkers and climbers from all over the world.
